A Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD) is an Oral Appliance System used in the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA).
Device therapy is typically prescribed for the treatment of Sleep Disordered Breathing and worn in the mouth during Sleep, working by precisely repositioning the lower jaw (mandible) into a slightly forward position, to open the Oropharynx (upper airway), facilitating overnight optimal oxygenation. This prescribed forward movement helps keep the airway open overnight by preventing the collapse of soft tissues in the Oropharynx, which is a common cause of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.
MAD systems are often prescribed for individuals who have mild to Moderate Sleep Apnoea and also patients diagnosed with Sleep Apnoea and are unable to tolerate the alternative treatment prescription of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy.
MADs are bespoke custom-made device systems, designed and placed by qualified dentists, with precise knowledge and experience in the area of Dental Sleep Medicine.
Bespoke fit, planned lower jaw movement, consideration of the temporomandibular joints (jaw joint) movement, patient medical and dental history, including patient medication and diagnosis are among several criteria to be considered for individual comfort and successful Mandibular Advancement Device therapy.
While MADs are effective for many people, it is important to consult with a qualified healthcare professional in the area of Sleep Medicine, including Dental Sleep Medicine for a comprehensive diagnosis and precise treatment recommendations for Sleep-related Breathing Disorders.
