Sleep apnoea is a medical condition characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. These interruptions, known as apnoeas, can last from a few seconds to a minute or more and often disrupt normal sleep patterns, leading to poor-quality rest. There are three main types of sleep apnoea:

  1. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA):

    • This is the most common type.
    • It occurs when the muscles at the back of the throat relax too much, causing a temporary blockage of the airway.
    • Risk factors include obesity, age, smoking, and anatomical features like a narrow airway.
  2. Central Sleep Apnoea (CSA):

    • This is less common.
    • It happens when the brain fails to send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing.
    • It is often associated with conditions like heart failure, stroke, or the use of certain medications.
  3. Complex or Mixed Sleep Apnoea Syndrome:

    • A combination of both obstructive and central sleep apnoea.

Symptoms

  • Loud snoring (common in OSA).
  • Episodes where breathing stops, often noticed by a partner.
  • Gasping or choking during sleep.
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness.
  • Morning headaches.
  • Difficulty concentrating or memory problems.
  • Irritability or mood changes.

Complications

If untreated, sleep apnoea can lead to serious health problems, including:

  • High blood pressure.
  • Heart disease.
  • Stroke.
  • Type 2 diabetes.
  • Depression.
  • Increased risk of accidents due to daytime sleepiness.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Sleep Apnoea is typically diagnosed through an overnight Sleep Study (polysomnography), either conducted in a Hospital or at home, using
portable Home Sleep testing devices. The test must be further analysed and reported on by the doctor ordering the test.

Depending on the results of your Sleep Test, treatment options may include:

  • Oral Appliance therapy, dependent on your sleep test results. Oral appliance therapy may be prescribed by a Respiratory doctor for those diagnosed with Mild to Moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Those patient’s with a diagnosis of Severe Sleep Apnoea may also be prescribed Oral Appliance Therapy (Mandibular Advancement Device) therapy, by their doctor, where C.P.A.P. cannot be tolerated,
  • C.P.A.P. (Continuous Positive Airways Pressure) also known as mask therapy. A bedside machine which delivers a steady stream of air to keep the airway open. This is prescribed for patients by their doctor, if indicated to optimally manage patient Sleep Apnoea, as diagnosed by their Sleep test.
  • Detailed Lifestyle changes which may include:  Sleep hygiene review, which includes several factors, such as avoiding caffeine, especially after 12md, avoiding screens close to bedtime, bedroom peacefulness, optimal room temperature to induce sleep and optimal sleep preparation management amongst several other important sleep hygiene factors. Weight loss may be recommended, avoiding alcohol and/or medications which can worsen the Sleep Apnoea diagnosis. Adjusting sleeping position, amongst several other appropriate interventions, tailored to each patient.
  • Surgery: In some severe cases of sleep apnoea procedures to remove or reposition tissues may occasionally be considered.
